Just Below the Surface is a one session discussion course book that explores the connections between Deepwater Horizon, energy policies and our lifestyles. The course offers an opportunity to reflect further on this historical event and the lessons it holds for us moving forward—individually and collectively. The intent is not to assign blame, but rather to take responsibility—as conscious consumers and concerned, active citizens.
Discussion Course Goals:
- Explore the connections between the oil spill, energy policy and our lifestyles.
- Consider a variety of perspectives on the “lessons” of the Deepwater Horizon blowout.
- Consider meaningful ways in which to respond to the oil spill.
- Identify steps to reduce fossil fuel use in our own lives.

What You Can Do
Just Below the Surface was developed in partnership with members of Portland to Gulf Coast, a group of concerned Oregonians who traveled to the Gulf Coast shortly after the pipe was sealed. The group went with the goal of building meaningful relationships and bringing home informed stories of lives and systems impacted by the disaster. They continue to meet and work together to create tools, such as this one, to inspire more sustainable choices everywhere. You can learn more about their work at www.PDX2GulfCoast.com.
